Tatuaje Begins Shipping L’Atelier Côte d’Or and Surrogates Backline Next Week

July 8, 2025 By Matthew Tabacco

Tatuaje has announced that they are once again releasing a limited run of L’Atelier Côte d’Or. Originally released as a churchill in 2015 and 2017, L’Atelier Côte d’Or 2019 will now be a 6 x 50 toro. The company said in a press release that the 2019 naming convention is simply the next year they intended to release this product and didn’t have the opportunity to do so. We first saw this release make its debut at PCA 2025.

  • Wrapper: Sancti Spiritus
  • Binder: Nicaragua
  • Filler: Nicaragua
  • Size: 6 x 50
  • MSRP: $18.00 per cigar
  • Limited Run: 1,500 boxes of 10 (15,000 cigars)

This original project was born from a small amount of Pelo de Oro that Don Pepin Garcia had grown which gave Pete the opportunity to use it in 2015 for the limited release. Utilizing the higher priming Sancti Spiritus wrapper found on the L’Atelier Selection Spéciale vitolas, a blend of fillers that incorporates the Pelo de Oro was used. This formula remains the same – dark Sancti wrapper, medium blend incorporating Pelo do Oro – but this version is a 6 x 50. The resulting profile for Côte d’Or is complex, rich and extremely special.

In addition, the other product that Tatuaje is releasing is the Surrogates Backline. Surrogates Backline is a project that started with Dan replacing a vacuum tube on his guitar amp when he realized that the top of the tube resembled the fuma head that Tatuaje uses on some of their vitolas. Thus, the idea for an Amp Box was born. Dan wanted to do two different sizes in the box as guitar tube amps have pre-amp tubes and power tubes in them. While Tatuaje decided to use the same blend for both sizes, the larger size should have a slightly higher priming wrapper on them, albeit just the next sorting up.

  • Wrapper: Habano Rosado – Ecuador
  • Binder: Nicaragua
  • Filler: Nicaragua
  • Sizes: EL454 – 4 x 54  /  EL554 – 5 x 54
  • MSRP: EL454 – $9.50 per cigar  /  EL554 – $10.00 per cigar
  • Limited Run: 1,000 mixed boxes of 20 (20,000 cigars)

The two sizes that the company decided on when blending was 4 x 54 and 5 x 54. As for the blend, it is medium-full with Habano Ecuador wrapper and Nicaraguan fillers. During blending at the factory, Dan said this particular version reminded him of ” a certain amp tone that had a lot of mid-range and a little grit” and that this was the perfect start for the series. This is the first of the “Amp Series” and the intent is to create a different blend again next year, that will be reminiscent of a different style of amp.

The company said both of these projects will begin shipping to select retailers next week.
