When it comes to the monthly cigar clubs and/or subscriptions, there are many good ones. However, it is always nice when something outside the norm of a preset pack of five to seven cigars that come in a nice bag and shipped to your door pops up out of nowhere. While many of you might not have heard of Vintage Cigar Lounge & Club in Westerly, Rhode Island, it is a shop that I now find one of my absolute favorites when I am in there area, especially when going to either one of the Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods resorts which are not far away.
We were sent a mysterious package from our friends at VCL earlier this month and when we opened it we were so excited to find out what it was all about. The brown paper covering that had a had written note which read “October ’23 Offering of Dubious Origin”. Inside of the brown paper was an old VHS cassette tape case from the early 1990’s which had a “VCL” label with the words “Cult Video Club” to the right. Written in a black marker below “Horror Remaster ’23” set the tone for what would be a Halloween theme to this inaugural monthly project. What I believe is the original handwritten label from the actual tape that was once inside is written across the middle as:
The Flash
Bainbridge Video
522-3216
July 16, 1992
After opening this VHS case, we were greeted to a bag of five cigars in a “Biohazard Specimen” bag. The cigars were:
- Tatuaje Face Skinny Monster
- Tatuaje Mummy Skinny Monster
- Emilio Grimalkin Seasonal release
- Black Label Trading Company Barrio Santos
- Black Label Trading Company Last Rites
In addition, there was also some Halloween themed stickers and a small flyer describing what was inside. While simple, some thought was put into this and it was fun to open and experience. I reached out to Brendan Cox of Vintage Cigar Lounge & Club who told me “Just trying to do something fun and different to shake things up a bit, but we’re keeping it limited so it stays kinda special. That’s why every month there will be some sort of theme of something vintage that we’ll include small things like stickers, cards etc from the past and new Vintage Cigar Lounge stickers.”
Currently, anyone can buy one of these sets online but they will be limited to quantities of 25-30 each month. Brendan says if it takes off, “we may switch to a preorder system but that it will always be $50, always hand picked cigars that we like, never anything we “need to get rid of”, there will always be two random packs that have an additional free gift like a coupon, additional cigar etc.”
