Today, we learned of the passing of Joel Sherman, the former CEO of Nat Sherman. Sherman passed away on September 9th at the age of 85.
Joel was the son of Nat Sherman, the original founder of the brand Nat Sherman. Based out of New York, where they also had the famous Nat Sherman Townhouse which closed in 2020. Nat Sherman was sold to Altria in 2017 and in 2020 the company decided to leave the premium cigar business and the trademarks were sold to Michael Herklots and Brendan Scott who both worked for Nat Sherman International.
Joel Sherman was born on August 2, 1939 and began working for his father when he was young sweeping floors and stocking shelves before joining his father full time in the business in 1963. Sherman left the company in 1978 before making a return to steer the ship in 1990 when his father passed away. In doing so, he brought his three children, Bill, Michele, and Larry with him.
Michael Herklots posted to Facebook earlier today remembering Sherman;
“Mr. Sherman’s life was defined by his deep dedication to his family, friends, the company he helped build, and the industry he loved. Son of Nat Sherman, father to Bill, Michele, and Larry, and patriarch of the Sherman family, his legacy leaves a profound impact on all who knew him.
I had the privilege of working for Mr. Sherman and his family beginning in June 2011. He was an incredible leader with an unwavering “family first” approach. A few days after my first daughter was born, he called my desk and simply said, “Go home.” Before I could explain what I needed to finish, he repeated, “Go. Home. Now,” and hung up. The work could wait.
One of the proudest moments of my career was working alongside him to create the Joel Sherman 75th Celebration cigar for his 75th birthday. This limited edition was more than a product; it was a reflection of Joel’s passion for the craft and his love for sharing cigars with friends, family, and enthusiasts. It was also the first cigar to bear his name.
We celebrated his 75th birthday in 2014 with an unforgettable evening at the Grand Havana Room in New York City. Mr. Sherman, always the storyteller, filled the room with laughter and warmth, sharing stories from his life. It was a special night with a special man.
Mr. Sherman’s leadership, integrity, and commitment to quality made him one of the most respected contributors in the industry. His kindness and dedication to doing what was right left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him, especially those of us who worked for him and his family.
Joel’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the stories he shared, and the cigars that brought people together. Sending lots of love to the Shermans.
Rest in peace, Mr. Sherman. Give Myrna an overdue hug.”
