Earlier this year, Dissident, part of the Oveja Negra brand family, was purchased by Cynn and Josh Coburn. The last time we saw Cynn was at TPE 2022, when the sale was just announced. She wasn’t exhibiting and had only owned the brand for a few weeks. Now at PCA 2022, Cynn and Josh were both on hand to debut themselves at their first official trade show.
Most of the existing core brands of Dissident remained the same as they were before the sale, aside from a few minor adjustments. Cynn herself is now the face of the brand, and uses her face on some of their marketing- including their first Limited Edition cigar, the Molotov.
The Molotov is a 5 x 50 PCA trade show exclusive that is also the first cigar that Cynn has blended since buying the brand. The Molotov features Ecuadorian Rojiso wrapper, Ecuadorian binder, with Nicaraguan Ometepe, Esteli and Dominican fillers. The combination creates a beautiful Habano cigar with some strength to it. Cynn told us only 500 boxes were made with this first run. When asked about a potential second run, Cynn left the door open by saying “right now, I am going to say yes.”
Cynn also revealed to us she is working on a true Connecticut shade cigar. It is something she said Dissident doesn’t have it its current lineup but she would love to add it in. She said she has multiple projects in the works, which gives us a lot to look forward to by next year. Perhaps we will see a new release at TPE 2023.
Dissident also had their event-only whiskey on display. It is a 3 year old small batch single barrel bourbon, with a proof of 101. It is made and distilled at Tenacity Craft in Detroit, Michigan. You can find it at retailers who host a Dissident event. Typically it is raffled off to attendees who purchase one or more boxes of Dissident Cigars.
