The original Fuente Fuente OpusX was released in 1995 and twenty years later in 2015 Arturo Fuente released a new OpusX blend called the Oro Oscuro. The Oro is still a Dominican puro using all wrapper, binder, fillers from the Dominican Republic but for the wrapper they utilize a slightly different wrapper compared to the original OpusX that was a bit thicker and rustic to allow for a longer fermentation getting a darker richer color for the wrapper.

Under the Lid:
The cigars are adorned with the classic Fuente Fuente OpusX main band alongside a Destino al Siglo sub band and a golden yellow foot band. Destino al Siglo loosely translates to “Destined for the Century”. The wrapper is a dark brown with a minor amount of mottling and a few prominent veins. The wrapper seams are tight and the cap has been applied very well.

The cold draw offered notes of mild sweetness and a hint of bread and yeast. The wrapper offers aromas of wood and earth and the foot aromas of mushroom and manure. The draw before light up seems to just have the perfect amount of resistance
Performance Notes
First Third: On light up the OpusX Oro opens up with notes of bread, cedar, and caramel like sweetness. A few more puffs and the complexity really develops with background notes of mild pepper, mild leather, mild baking spices with a hint of cinnamon. As the first third continues the upfront notes of cedar, bread, and caramel continue and play off of each other taking turns during different puffs being the star of the show.
The OpusX starts to take on a creamy note after about an inch into the cigar that coats the mouth. The background notes of mild pepper comes up front a bit more into the profile and the leather and cinnamon hang out in the back. There is a mild mushroom earthiness that comes in and out during some puffs adding a depth of umami. The final parts of the first third continue being bread, cedar, caramel, and mild pepper upfront consistently. The finish is a medium finish that is moderately mouth watering with notes of mild pepper, and cedar. The retrohale adds more depth into the notes of bread and caramel sweetness. The palate simulation is on the tip and the sides of the tongue with a bit into the cheeks.
Second Third: The second third continues with the core flavors of cedar, bread, caramel, and mild pepper and all the notes work in harmony creating a nice balance. The cedar note occasionally reminds me of a freshly carved arbutus tree with my initials being carved into it with a pocket knife. The background notes drop off a bit and are mainly mushroom earthiness, and cinnamon. The rest of the second third has very little transition into any new flavors and holds strong with the corenotes with those background flavors coming in and out of the profile occasionally with the continued creaminess as well. As the second third is coming to a close there is the occsional lemon zest flavor that I am finding that doesnt stay around for too many puffs but adds a bit of a palate cleansing and wakes things up a bit. The finish is medium with cedar and mild pepper. The retrohale is bread, mild pepper, and generic sweetness. The palate stimulation is the tip of the tongue and sides of the tongue.
Final Third: The final third continues to produce that core flavor of cedar, bread, caramel, and mild pepper. The leather note comes back into the profile during a few puffs alongside the mushroom earthiness. The baking spices and cinnamon have fully disappeared from the profile. There is a mild toasted note that is taken on by the cedar but it is not offputing or overly drying. The final third continues and ends with the flavors of mild toasted cedar, bread, caramel, mild pepper and a mild leather and mild earthiness in the backgrounds. The finish is medium with cedar. The retrohale is bread and mild pepper. The palate stimulation is the tip of the tongue the the sides of the tongue.

Smokin Experience: The Arturo Fuente OpusX Oro Oscuro was a wonderful smoking experience from initial light up to the last few inches of the entire seven inch cigar. It had great balance with the cedar, bread, caramel, and mild pepper with intriguing background notes that would come in and out of the profile. The cigar had a great draw and very good construction but did need a minor touch up on each sample to keep things straight. I would recommend this cigar to any experienced cigar enthusiast and I think as long as you have a bit of age on these they would still be very approachable for a new smoker with the strength coming in at medium.

Mitchell Santaga – Product Reviews

Mitchell Santaga started his journey into tobacco in 2011 by trying different flavored and machine-made cigars while enjoying a handle of Jack Daniels whisky. Shortly after that he yearned for a more premium experience and dove headfirst into pipe tobacco that his local tobacconist blended, and soon after started indulging in premium cigars.
