J.C. Newman Ships New El Baton Cigars

August 8, 2022 By Matthew Tabacco

J.C. Newman Cigar Co. is shipping its new El Baton cigars to premium cigar retailers across the United States. J.C. Newman first introduced El Baton cigars in 1914.  The original El Baton was a 5-cent cigar rolled with Cuban tobacco in J.C. Newman’s Cleveland cigar factory.  A century ago, El Baton was a very popular and famous cigar brand in the Midwest but its popularity waned before World War II. In 2008, Eric and Bobby Newman relaunched El Baton as J.C. Newman’s first cigar hand rolled in Nicaragua. Today, El Baton is being relaunched with new packaging and an improved blend. We saw the new El Baton cigar at PCA 2022 at the J.C. Newman cigar booth.

El Baton is a full-bodied cigar wrapped with an Ecuadorian wrapper and rolled with a blend of rich, Nicaraguan tobaccos. It is being released in four sizes in boxes of 25:

  •  El Baton Belicoso, 5″ x 56 with a MSRP of $7.90

  • El Baton Double Toro, 6″ x 60 with a MSRP of $8.70

  • El Baton Double Torpedo, 6.25″ x 56 with a MSRP of $8.20

  • El Baton Robusto, 5″ x 54 with a MSRP of $7.70

“El Baton has been J.C. Newman’s under-the-radar cigar,” said Drew Newman, fourth-generation owner.  “As I was unsatisfied, I decided to tweak the El Baton blend and return to more of a traditional style of packaging that better reflects the century-old history of this my great-grandfather’s old cigar brand.”
